In preparing for student led conferences, I came across this article and found it to be incredibly helpful for any parent, but particularly for those with children that struggle with the organizational aspect of school (and life). The article is targeted at parents of a middle schooler, but I find it helpful for parents of a much broader age range of children. In earlier grades, we are laying the groundwork for these critical skills students depend on in middle and high school. And as we all know too well, the years fly by in the blink of an eye- middle school will be here before you know it!
The article lays out very concrete steps that both the child and the parent can take to be successful. She also gives sage wisdom for when things fall through the cracks. I encourage all of you to read it. Keeping your middle school organized
The author of the article, Dr. Nancy Darling, a professor of psychology at Oberlin University, has written a series of articles for parents of adolescents. As a parent of a preadolescent, I already feel myself connecting with her insight.
Adolescents are like lawyers They have honed their arguing skills.
Adolescents are like toddlers They need to be well rested and fed.
Adolescents are like kindergartners They are overwhelmed by new demands.
Until next week, take care.
